A Moraine officer spotted a dark blue 2006 Honda Civic reported stolen and activated the cruiser’s overhead lights for a traffic stop at North Springboro Pike and Main Street when the car took off south on North Springboro Pike.
The Civic was in the right turn lane to Dixie Avenue when the driver ran a red light and was struck by a 2020 Nissan Van headed west on Kettering Boulevard, according to a crash report.
The Civic then struck a light pole on the intersection on South Dixie Avenue, and the van then also hit the pole and the front of a 2018 Toyota Rav4 stopped on South Dixie Avenue.
The utility pole was snapped at its base in the crash, and an AES Ohio crew responded to the scene.
The man driving the Civic, identified as 26-year-old Gene Edmund Blatchford Jr. of Dayton, and his passenger, 24-year-old Ki’ara Smith of Dayton, were taken with serious injuries to Kettering Medical Center Main Campus, the crash report stated.
The road was littered with debris following the crash as well as filled trash bags, backpacks, extension cords and other items that came from the stolen car.
Traffic was diverted in the area and was backed up on North Springboro Pike, South Dixie Avenue and Kettering Boulevard.
